Thread: Crashes & Panics: NAS for Macs w/ Netatalk, HFS drives, USB wifi dongle.

hey folks!

i'm new ubuntu, please bare me! been bit of apple power user, linux gets whole lot more complicated - though love amount of control , flexibility gives!

here's issues (likely related): intermittent (~daily) mix of crashes , kernel panics. kernel panic log below - not sure how recover prior boot's crash log.. kernel panic screen can 'exited' ctrl-alt-f6 ctrl-alt-f7, though computer doesn't shut down after kernel panics -- hangs on 'kubuntu' shut-down screen.. beyond panics, crashes involve fans spinning , lights being on, monitor not turn on mouse clicks / keystrokes, keyboard lights not turn on / of (i.e. caps lock), , ssh unavailable.. have hard shut-down (hold power button). .

hardware: ibm think centre a50: p4 3.8ghz, 1gb ram, 40gb hd.
additional hw: internal 400gb hfs+ hd (journaling disabled), tenda wireless usb dongle, enternal 2tb hfs+ hd (journaling disabled, recent addition - problem occurred before), dvdr
additional sw: netatalk, hfs utils, avahi, open ssh, x11vnc.

notes: installed ubuntu 11.10, added xfce4, xubuntu desktop, , kubuntu desktop.. use xubuntu desktop. far computer serves nas server other apple computers in house.. not else on machine @ point..

setup netatalk , avahi based on http://www.kremalicious.com/2008/06/...achine-volume/ -- though did not compile netatalk separately, used packaged version in ubuntu apparently no longer needs compiled due updates base config.

due crashes , other issues, i've had force power-off computer on several occations, , perform umount -l on 400gb hfs drive, causing corrupt catalogue , incorrect file counts (corrected fsck_hfsplus).

added fstab:
/dev/sdb2 /home/zryan/timemachine hfsplus rw,exec,auto,nosuid,nodev,user 0 0

example of manual mount command:
sudo mount -t hfsplus -o rw,nosuid,nodev /dev/sdb2 /[mountpoint]
netatalk options used: cnidscheme:dbd options:usedots,tm

looking on dmesg, see few other concerning lines may somehow related.. these near boot:
