Thread: gnome 3 display error

i installed gnome3.. worked on first run after top toolbar replaced bar multipixilated colors "click here" .
on able identify broken text.. ie.. on firefox.. says f r f x w b br w r(boxes in between spaces colors)..
tried take screenshot show guys problem when take snapshot showing me wallpaper , nothing else.. btw ubuntu untiy desktop working fine..
tried re-installing(i dont know how remove gnome 3 files , download n install them again) gnome 3 few times..

gnome3 part of default install. unity , gnome-shell built on gnome3. im guessing g-shell talking , need shut down compiz. g-shell not run under compiz , needs stopped. on other side have unity 3d not run without compiz, , suspect thats why unity works , gnome not. fire multi colored screen of yours and...

press ctrl alt f6 should give readable terminal (tty) , enter:

killall compiz

press ctrl alt f7 this return desktop , usable desktop.

option #2 - remove compiz in terminal:

sudo apt-get remove compiz

remove unity 3d , replace unity 2d , both work.

if not happy setup can reinstall compiz.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
