How to cut a barcode

this seem rather simple - i'm looking to take supplied barcode , cut across vertically eliminate price information found on 1 side, ean5 portion contains pricing. barcode has own white background border box can romoved, see way divide / cut apart barcode. when clicking on direct select tool, each line , number breaks down separate outlines, elements reamin grouped (though under "object" show grouped).

 

i've tried more labourious method of selectively covering portions of code background colour - these route seems unneccessary; should able cut object in half.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
