Thread: Computing fields and degrees
i'm senior in high school, , i'm realizing i'm going have make big decisions pretty soon. college coming up, need figure out want in life. while of friends have heart set on path, there quite few me still undecided. still, i'd advice guys form ideas.
i've been math , science guy, engineering has been 1 of big prospects. there many fields , i'm not sure i'd fit. i've gotten interested in computers, taking class on programming, , learning stuff on own. learn fast , have lot of fun it. it's 1 of few classes enjoy seeing how fast can nail assignments, opposed dreading work of class. i've thought maybe i'd want go related (software moreso, never had thing hardware side). i'm not sure it. type of work there it? in school , feel paying job, choosing field set me or forward in aspect?
also, i've heard employers don't care degrees in field, moreso how know , can do. waste of degree learn stuff when teach myself on side of degree? overall better kept hobby?
i'm bit nervous because i'm not child prodigy setting web servers @ ten or anything. know it's bit unfounded, still feel might bit behind.
also, while there's more demand stuff ever, bubble that's going burst? outsourced?
know can't give me straight answers , don't expect them, want hear opinion on it, seeing lot of have jobs in field. thanks.
don't feel bit behind, hell 35 when started. couldn't decide @ age, spent time in military, got me paying job civilian. took me 15 years of till talk self knowing wanted. finished associate of science, 1 class @ time, part time. in fall start last 90 credits of degree in computer science. chose because not specialized programming degree, , more difficult, in opinion offshored. okay not know want, think formal education more important, people know self taught, underpaid skills. employers use lack of formal training justification pay them less. in end love, , passionate about.
