Thread: How to change screen output, when laptop screen is broken?

my laptop (samsung n510) screen broken , i've tried install ubuntu 11.10. i'm planning use laptop hdmi connected tv. while installing usb stick, both laptop screen (cracked light on) , tv displaying. when installation finished , reboots internal screen 1 displaying.
since cannot see on screen wondering if there way type kind of shortcut or how settings without seeing anything.

  • i've tried fn+f4 buttons has screen on it, nothing happens.
  • i've tried plugging hdmi cable in before startup, nothing happens, plugging hdmi cable in while it's on not work either.
  • i've tried unplugging laptop screen before startup, hdmi plugged in, (worked in windows) laptop won't boot.

impossible?

1)
open sudo gedit /etc/default/grub


2)
change line:
grub_cmdline_linux_default="quiet splash"



grub_cmdline_linux_default=""

save changes , exit.

3)
run command update changes grub:
sudo update-grub

4)
reboot

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
