Thread: OS stopped working: command not found?

the os acting strange, rebooted. when try boot, gives this:

command groups not found
command xconf not found
etc...

ideas?

edit: thought add few more details:

grub seems flash error message says 'error: file not found' before going old interface (not pretty purple one).

boot process giving errors

" ... failed start terminated exit status ..."

and

"init: faild spawn acpid main process: unable execute: no such file or directory".

no upgrades or modifications made prior this.

dying hard drive? i'd run smartctl livecd.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings. how do I change the e-mail address for my merchant account
