the problem in image 1 appears extremely common.

after logging in, open terminal ctrl-alt-t (if doesn't work, try ctrl-alt-f1), type this:
code:
unity --reset
(if unity --reset doesn't work, try typing unity --replace instead)

if used ctrl-alt-f1 terminal, press ctrl-alt-f7 return desktop.

thing can try installing desktop environment, kde or xfce.
code:
sudo apt-get install kde4
code:
sudo apt-get install xfce4
after installing desktop environment, can install x display manager, kdm or gdm, , remove lightdm.
code:
sudo apt-get install kdm
code:
sudo apt-get install gdm
code:
sudo apt-get remove lightdm
if neither of these suggestions work, need data , reinstall ubuntu.
