ok, first off, i'm running server edition 10.04 64-bit.

crt has native resolution of 1280x1024 , server choose resolution 130x80 text lines or similar.
want either a. use smaller resolution 800x600, or b. use larger font it's easier read.

nice if either disable, or dramatically extend screen timeout. disabling acpi in bios did not have effect.

i've used google hearts content , have not been able find viable solution works. found loads of suggestions, no thread or says fixed it. tried several myself, , in end, had wipe drive , re-install server because fubared grub point system barely useable.

can think of use grub option 'grub_gfxmode'. check grub tutorial.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
