Illustrator CS4 crashes when pasting text, and will not allow me to type text into the artboard.

ok, here's deal.

 

today illustrator cs4 decided start crashing on me when try paste text art board. not allow me type text artboard. whenever try type, tool shortcuts. have alread tried deleting preferences , hasn't worked @ all.

 

i'm sure i'm not person have problem. please help!!! never realize how use these programs until crash on lol

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
