Thread: Cannot display this graphics mode

as absolute beginner, first searched absolute beginner forum little success, not realizing searches not span forums. then, posted on ab forum, initial success fantab (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...ght=burnsmicro, posting #4) recommended placing link in /etc/x11/xsession.d/ fixresolution.sh script.

unfortunately “cannot display..” issue resurfaced when fired pc after holidays. fantab fix no longer works , ab forum not help, other referring me forum.

problem forum overwhelming beginner, 900 postings “graphics resolution- upgrade /blank screen after reboot ”!

did attempt step wise approach outlined mafoelffen in sticky post, unable [shift] access grub when booting hd , not know how reinstall grub livecd (or other source). reinstalling ubuntu-11.10 did not help. neither did uncommenting “# grub_hidden_timeout=00” /etc/default/grub or editing “grub_cmdline_linux_default =..” in same file ..all done through ctrl-alt-f1 ci.

/home/username/.xsession_errors showed ton of warnings , errors, beyond comprehension, starting

other efforts failed:

• changing resolution restoring script set lower resolution 1280x1024 60 1024x768 60 used ubuntu-11.10 livecd.
• uncommenting “# grub_gfxmode=640x480” in /etc/defaults/grub.

livecd works fine , [hd] boot screen seems work fine too. is, bios screen --> black screen --> purple --> purple + "ubuntu", dots , text --> black + "cannot display..". gather linux has loaded because can access ci ctrl-alt-f1.

did display working briefly, 2 days ago, after reinstalling [over] ubuntu-11.10 updates , 3rd party s/w. rebooted fine hd. broke again when "apt-get updated" , "apt-get upgraded". tried update graphics driver through system settings --> drivers, got error , did not install (yet had installed without hitch month ago). not sure broke ubuntu. on rebooting, got dreaded "cannot display..". subsequent attempts install ubuntu-11.10 (replace ubuntu-11.10 ubuntu-11.10) have failed resolve "cannot display.." issue. have yet clean ubuntu-11.10 install.

other info: 64 bit amd pc ati/amd proprietary fglrx graphics on motherboard.

in short, pc unusable until can screen work again.

cannot how grateful help. there must solution, in 900 postings. but, how can narrow down and, have expertise understand it?
