proprietary ati drivers haven't worked card long time, can't try those.
bummer windows xp works flawlessly on always, dual monitors , all. plug in tv , voila! works. big reason switched linux years ago because allowed prolonged use of older hardware. doesn't seem coming true me in case.
(unrelated: unity makes linux practically unusable me, major downside moving forward ubuntu, that's issue.)
there might hope (though read card has poor linux support-at least in 10.04):

newer version of opensource drivers works seems support card better...dual-head support
see xrandr 1.2 documentation how set multiple monitors.

speed things why not use xubuntu 11.10?
ok anyway winxp works fine, os (especially it's kernel) 2001, while 11.10 2011. old ubuntu, know, works fine.
luck solving issue.
