Thread: Is Ubuntu usable with disabled swap?
i still having issues described in different threads, of them are:
is ubuntu usable on laptop after "suspend"?
ubuntu 11.10 - performance issues after upgrade
why 1 application take ubuntu down?
still not sure how fix issue. now, in order have ubuntu running without freezing have reboot every 2-3 days.
during freezing permanently reading hd. ... assume reading/writing swap. decided disable swap. first day worked fine. second day, after "suspend" started command line compilation process... end of compilation got laptop frozen (not responding keyboard, mouse action) , permanently reading hd. waited 3 minutes... did not have time wait more... may laptop recover after 20-60 minutes... not acceptable me. before running process had 300mb of memory available per htop (i did not run "free")...
can not understand 1 thing -- why ubuntu got frozen state?
ubuntu smart enough not let keyboard , mouse become frozen???
suspend ram may work without swap, won't able suspend disk without swap partition. other case swap needed if run out of physical memory. linux move inactive programs , memory structures out swap partition make room active programs requesting more ram. if system can't provide enough ram may indeed lead state system seems frozen.
