hi guys,

i've decided give linux (ubuntu 11.10) chance home computer (switching windows 7) , need come alternatives things use in windows. installed , got cracking... first time in 6 years there's linux on pc agan

well, need come replacement yahoo messenger. it's quite important me. ran 2 options , both of them unsatisfactory... first 1 thing installed default (empathy think) , there's pidgin (i used on windows while, i'm sticking moment).

both of these have following shortcomings:
- there's no way access online log (yahoo saves chats on web can example see on home pc log of discussion had work pc). rather major...
- avatars not showing... show when user comes online (but it's not shown if user online before me). not problem if can 50 or contacts have quit messenger log in when see me coming online
- no "photo share". while file transfer supported there no photo share feature. quite annoying really.

seasoned linux user in situation? surely reporting these bugs pidgin , empathy not going matter (they obvious bugs, can't imagine not aware of them). second option me try , fix myself, beyond skills.

third option can see sounds bit complicated... thinking of trying run yahoo messenger on wine (or similar if exists). sounds bit daunting (searching wine in software centers showed 4 "wines" + few frontends). think colorful yahoo messenger quite nasty in rather spartan looking ubuntu...

guys think should do? try wine approach? have option?

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
