pop up windows

hi

i have series of pages i've built in dreamweaver have 'shop now' button on them. want when user clicks button, pop window opens , in window have images of couple of external retail sites user can click visit product on site. don't want use browser window, rather sort of javascript  window (but doesn't have if other ways of doing it) opens in foreground on page (as if part of page on top of everything) , has x type thing lets user click close if want to.

i'm assuming need kind of javascript. not 'coder' more visual developer references need solid examples please of how add code , working examples demonstrating how looks. ideally simple solutions if possible. , ones can implemented on server rather linking else's. open application might let me work in conjunction dreamweaver add code pages (eg use 'wowslider' add self scrolling photos pages @ mo), or plugins might achieve same results within dreamweaver itself.

i need working way ie6 modern browsers , ipads/mobiles.
