well having problems computer, fan failing , kept randomly shutting off kept using until 1 day shut down , when tried using got error message

error: no such partition entering rescue mode
nevertheless needed important files burned slax live cd access files, storage media slax detects floppy disk, have tried accessing files other live distros same thing happens.

seems computer isn't detecting hd, might going on.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
