so.
dad loves ubuntu, have hard time understanding why or doesn't things. i'm not saying windows perfect, it's understand. , that's marginal days.
so, title says, i'm trying network ubuntu 10.10 windows xp sp2.
dad has system set should able access it, , have mine set should able access it, yet still can't across each others systems.
basics should cover? there tricks haven't tried yet?
sharing on windows simple me. , assume ubuntu can access windows no problem considering how 'awesome' dad says is. , don't doubt it. don't understand it. whenever try access shared folder dad set says along lines of "you might not have permissions view folder, check admin blahblahblah." when try access system dads "unable mount location: failed retrieve share list server."
1 don't know how make system more accessible him, , dad tried setting every possible "let on network access folder" way work. have failed. may ask help?

how trying connect each other? connected can ping, have @ samba shares. have allowed sharing on windows box ubuntu should able see in nautilus network something , havn't got windows on @ moment

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
