Edges not smooth after recoloring

i novice in photoshop , i've been going crazy trying accomplish seems easy process. received illustrator file of logo i'm trying work on...it has several issues i'm trying fix...in photoshop because have no idea how use illustrator.

 

my major issue recoloring parts of image while keeping edges smooth. it's brown , need black. have tried following methods:

 

magic wand brown part , create new layer via copy

   -using brush paint on it

   -using paint can fill selection - anti aliased, i've changed tolerance million times

 

use straight paint brush trace on it, using soft edge brush

    -my hand isn't steady enough it

 

magic wand , create new layer , on lay

 

converting black , white

    -it turns gray

 

adjusting layer hues, contrast, etc

 

i've googled how soften edges , have found nothing accomplishes simple task of changing black... please help!! :-|

if looking keep smooth vector edges found in original illustrator file... should editing in illustrator.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings. how do I change the e-mail address for my merchant account
