Shift+drag not working

in every veriosn of illustrator now, shift+drag used constrain object vertically or horizontally. why doesn't work in cs6? how can work?

have tried resetting preferences already? start resetting preferences following way: 1) quit illustrator if running. 2) relaunch illy holding down command + option + shift keys until get  confirmation dialog popup. choose yes proceed launch. win, ctrl+alt+shift keys.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
