Thread: Istalled on an External HDD and now cannot boot into Windows
hello, purchased , external hdd intent if installing ubuntu 11.10 on it.
used laptop interface. booted usb drive , completed installation process choosing "delete , install". selected external hdd , said delete existing partitions fine fresh out of box.
completed installation process , promted me reboot. did. when problems started.
bios freezes/is extremely slow on startup if external hdd connected (via usb 3.0 cable). not show bootable device.
when , select it not boot, not enter grub recover, sits single blinking cursor @ top left corner of page.
when try boot windows laptops internal hdd this: "error no such device" , "grub recover" terminal.
when try restore grub through interface lot of commands don't response, not error message, goes next line same promt: "grub recover" no sub text.
@ complete loss.
, appreciated.
remove hdd. reboot machine. when reboot machine, blinking cursor goes away right? main os boot grub? if does, reconnect drive, try , reboot. if external hdd boots great! if not boot main os partition. have accomplished this, try reformatting drive , reinstalling os 1 more time on external hdd.
if remove drive, reboot , can't boot main os partition on main internal hdd, put linux live cd drive, reboot , select linux live cd boot into, , try , find recovery options in terminal.
if don't know them, revisit thread, once have booted live cd, , ask away in forums. i'm not great linux recovery, i'm learning!
