Thread: Upgrade in place from 10.4 to 11.10 and can not boot
background: have dell inspiron m5010 running ubuntu 10.4 without issue. decided wait until after fall semester on attempt upgrade because taking blah blah blah ++ , didn't wait screw blah blah blah.
here's did. working 10.04 system, upgraded 10.10. wouldn't boot, chose boot recovery mode. there upgraded 11.04... again failed boot, again chose boot recovery mode , again upgraded 11.10. here again system doesn't boot.
have tried far: booting acpi=off, booting noacpi, booting both acpi=off , noacpi. have tried replacing grub options "quiet splash vt.handoff=7" "--verbose single," @ cli entering "sudo apt-get update," "sudo apt-get install fglrx," , rebooting, no luck far.
need help! no way system usable 10.04 impossible run 11.10. please tell me files provide , i'll best paste them, without working system hard.
first off sure oyu tested 11.10 in live session before doing upgrade, right? right?
secondly did use proprietary drivers before? if have remove them first before doing upgrade. hint (that u used proprietary drivers) provided in attempts in saving boot.
try boot cli , remove , purge fglrx (if that's using) , reboot , should bring gui can install new drivers.
here how: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/x/troublesho...from%20scratch
check under: problem: need remove -fglrx , reinstall -ati scratch
