XI closes when attempting to combine files

when attempt combine files, box appears saying there's problem , closes program.  running pro x on windows 8 , attempted discuss adobe via chat , advised x no longer supported , need upgrade.  paid , upgraded xi.  same problem.  not have suite, c6 "fix" not option.

are combining 2 pdf files? contain form fields? ordinary pdf file rather livecycle designer pdf files? happen 2 pdf files? how ram , free hard drive space have? happens if try insert pages 1 file other file?

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
