Page size different between design and preview modes

when accept default sizes when creating new site, page size appears should in design, when preview it, appears larger, perfect square.  so, think i'm creating in design not see when preview it.  see example below.  think i'm designing in design mode not result when preview it.  can tell me why is?  setting can modify? i've been accepting default settings when creating new site.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
