Thread: Keeping Gnome Shell and Openbox Seprate

hi everyone! (first post )

i've been playing around linux, ubuntu, quite while now, , got new laptop. installed ubuntu 11.10, , installed gnome shell. it. sometimes, however, prefer work in more of minimalist "mode." this, openbox. (i know they're pretty on opposite ends of spectrum ) installed openbox such @ login menu, choose between gnome , openbox sessions.

question is, how keep software , settings distinct? example, nautilus default file manager on gnome (use wallpaper , desktop, too) in ob, i'd rather use pcmanfm, , nitrogen manage wallpapers. possible not load gnome dependencies while in openbox session?

hi

don't know how default openbox session works, can create own session if want more control.

create following file in /usr/share/xsessions:

[desktop entry]
name=somename
type=xsession
exec=openbox

can choose somename session.

run more apps @ startup use ~/.config/openbox/autostart.sh. recommend use nm-applet magically connect internet (you need notification area work properly, run panel or standalone systray (such stalonetray)).

have fun!
