Thread: Ubuntu installation on MSI GT780DXR

i starting thread log progress installation of ubuntu on msi gt780dxr notebook. please feel free send comments , recommendations.

2012/01/07 - 2012/01/10
bought thing. windows 7 preinstalled, works fine. total disk space 1.5tb, 2 hard disks form raid0 (to gain speed, no redundancy). windows partitions: 8gb (recovery), 100mb (boot?), 900gb (system disk c: ), 500 gb (disk d: ). partition d: destroyed, partition d: shrunk 500gb.

2012/01/10 - 2012/01/11
following 64bit distributions (cds) did not boot:
ubuntu 11.10, 11.04, fedora (latest)

ubuntu 10.04 did boot. wifi not work. screen resolution bad (something 800x600 against naitive 1920x1080). rest looks fine.

grub (installed mbr, default settings) works fine. both windows7 , linux boots.

@ moment downloaded , installed updates. there no new problems far.

allow upgrades. start ubuntu upgrade. got problem gui, switched console , continued. @ moment of updating grub config files, kept old config files style.

booting new distr: works. screen resolution has increased 1024x768. started anogher upgrade, time console. finished ok. , again kept old grub config style. new kernel (2.6.38-13-generic) did not boot. old kernel (2.6.32-37-generic) still works (thanks grub, kept previous versions). windows7 still works.

kernel 2.6.38-13-generic (recover mode) hangs after message "loading initial ramdisk". need power off notebook, , choose agsin same grub line. time goes further (and 2-steps booting procedure reproduceble). see boot log messages. last 1 "usbhid: usb hid core driver". there no boot progress after it. keyboard works. there no reaction ctrl-alt-del (it problem of mapping - cannot use pgup/pgdwn buttons well). tried blacklist usb drivers, no luck far - still loaded!!!

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings. how do I change the e-mail address for my merchant account
