Thread: Video capture and editing on Solaris vs Debian vs Ubuntu
i interested in doing heavy video work. have advc 110 video capture device, using capture vhs video tapes, convert on server dvd format , burn dvd's using dvd production software. take captured video file , split in parts , convert other formats.
have need rip dvd video , encoding.
question these tasks setup suggest following.
server doing work is:
hp proliant dl-380 g4
dual cpu's 3.20 ghz / 800 mhz / 1mb l2
5120 mb ram
6 hard disks on hp smart array 6i controller (36.4 gb ultra320 scsi hd each)
raid set raid 5 (5 discs) 1 spare (6th disk)
usb, 2 ethernet ports, 1 ilo port, 1 scsi port
when comes 6 disk raid setting planning use raid-5 on 5 disks using 6th disk spare. think slow (due parity) since doing video editing?
other choice raid 1+0 (raid 10). not allow me have spare. think best? have @ least 50 - 2 hour vhs tapes capture , dvd's not included.
far operating system still considering 1 use. concerned security, undecided how proprietary software install on machine. flash etc, make me little wary.
have used ubuntu on laptop , have been satisfied, community support. looking try new , not sure expect far support , available software necessary perform above requirements (and others not mentioned).
deciding between debian 6 (squeeze) , solaris, default ubuntu if bad idea. going install debian on laptop have, , thinking solaris server.
video requirements 1 of major functions server must perform, , not know solaris. recommendations have concerning video requirements, , how solaris work on server hardware. if poor choice, please tell me recommend. thank you.
