Using Anchored Frame Object Attributes to "Store" Art Numbers

good morning, everyone,

i have been using framemaker on 15 years now, , tech writer has inherited lots of graphics-intensive documents previous writers, have struggled identifying source files embedded graphics. (i prefer embed graphics in documents, topic discussion ;-) ) more not, graphics have been named made sense original author @ time, nothing more cryptic code me now.

as result, on years, have developed personal "system" naming graphics files identifies/names each file document number in resides followed sequential number. example, if document number um345-123, graphic files named um345-123_0001, um345-123_0002, etc.  include small (hopefully unobtrusive) 8-point text frame in lower right-hand corner of graphics frame indicates file name base graphic. create art# tag includes autonumber document number (e.g., um345-123,) inserted text frame, , assign next sequential number graphic/file. advantage in future, files identified if wants use graphic , have pdf copy of document - can locate source file , either update or forward on.

one disadvantage in situations, fitting text frame/graphic number graphic frame tough - point detracts graphic itself.  wondering if possible somehow utilize anchored frame attributes store graphic number in these situations. perhaps create new attribute art number? has else done similar?

thanks in advance help!!!

we well, either text frame, or in caption table below, reference id set non-obnoxious gray. main issue doing id hand-typed, , can incorrect, when matters .

we have other metadata, end users don't see, such file type, scale , rotation, , text color set, @ rendering, invisible color views.

what want, however, metadata can't incorrect, , shows complete provenance of object. this, use text in original art several mm above art/table/chart extents. clip after import top edge of anchoring frame or graphic frame within. end users never see it, future document stewards can either slide image down, or pull frame edge up, reveal trail of crumbs leading object's place of birth.

caution: out-of-frame metadata may survive pdf, depending on distiller vintage , settings. can remove via examine document in acrobat pro.
