Absent Paper Clip

my supervisor no longer has navigation pane paper clip access attachments.  have seen many tips regarding how hide navigation pane, none showing how in place.  can view attachments going menu bar>view>hide/show>attachments, option.  cannot access laptop see if can determine problem, hoping else has experienced , has quick fix can pass along. we've tried f4, no joy.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
