Thread: How will additional installation affect grub?

i've got winxp , ubuntu 11.10 happily dual booting, both on main sytem drive: c / sda. want further installation of ubuntu studio 10.04 (ie older release) onto separate hard drive (e / sdd) formatted ntsf has loads of unallocated space on it. assume can choosing manual partitioning option during install process. installer automatically find existing grub on sda , add new ubuntu studio boot option (which want)? if not, how achieve this?

i believe latest versions of ubuntu still require grub installed (a sore point 'power' users). although there few ways work around (such installing grub partition instead of mbr), safest , best approach let grub install itself.

if have opportunity install mbr of new installation's drive (sdd) that. make sure bios still boots main drive , may still have original grub controlling things.

otherwise, after new installation:
select older/original ubuntu version @ boot. run first command put controll of boot original os (assuming sda designation of original ubuntu installation). run second command add new os original grub's menu:
code:
sudo grub-install /dev/sda sudo update-grub
watch upgrades when running secondary ubuntu. updates may revert control version's grub. if happens, rerun commands above.

note: can tell grub controlling boot noting first entry on grub menu. might want add background image 1 or both can tell more easily.
