Thread: Important folders have become octet stream

fancy nice laugh ? keep reading ^^.

okay, i've been doing web work, , testing on machine (thus requiring php).

got tired of opening apps root modify files , folders in /var/www/ folder.
proceeded try chmod commands on these folders gain full access them , modify things @ will.
however, in process of doing this, folders in /var/ directory have changed octet stream files unknown type.

computer no longer boot (it blocks on startup right around when has loaded alsa , timidity++).

can imagine quite put out, , grateful little hand in rectifying these horrendous mistakes.
ideas ?

info, machine running oneiric.

perhaps can chroot os live usb or live cd
chroot means running os if booted, can make changes.
