Thread: Newbie, Struggling - Reinstalling Vista over Ubuntu

hello everyone,

i'm sorry if has been posted before, i've looked around, none of other threads on issue seem correspond specific situation. although please point me in right direction if there's thread i've overlooked.

2 years ago installed ubuntu on computer (shared between me , brother) running windows vista. i'm leave university, , brother has asked me return computer original state.

i've done kind of thing plenty of times before, seem have hit roadblock time. have vista installation cd (the computer either didn't come recovery cd or has been lost). partitioned disk in ubuntu using gparted - there's 1 big, empty ntfs partition planning install vista on.

so... when use vista cd, windows installer shows 3 partitions:

disk 0 partition 1 primary
disk 0 partition 2 primary
disk 0 partition 3 logical

partition 1 formatted ntfs. though when come install, dialogue 'windows unable find system volume meets criteria installation'. i'm stuck.

make matters worse, when boot ubuntu... well, can't. 'error: unknown filesystem. grub rescue>'. i'm assuming can use live cd repartition stuff

wonderful. i'm leaving university , i've been told fix before leave, on penalty of death. either complete installation of vista on whole drive or sort of dual boot arrangement. whichever easier quite frankly.

hey, shame cannot convince brother, try make in gparted primary disk bootable. flag boot. hope helps
