Thread: Unity Randomly Failing
after 4 year hiatus running windows, returned ubuntu last fall. things have changed quite bit since then, , skills have quite rusty.
running stock 11.10 - installed 11.04, 11.10 came out next day, upgraded stock 11.04 installation.
periodically, whole desktop freeze 10 seconds, menus momentarily out of win2k (rendering menu bar wide displayed, pushing system setting/shutdown icon off edge of screen), , of icons on launcher lose little picture , replaced generic icon looks window. of icons remain same - firefox, one, others change - workspace switcher, portable hdd, keepass, etc. notice terminal session running folding@home goes grey.
of time, switch before can use computer again, stays way. way i've found fix reboot (windows habits die hard).
tried running unity --reset in terminal, renders lot of warnings, hangs after setting update "run_key", , have no launcher @ all.
ideas on how fix this? try screenshot later, since attempted fix mucked things worse, i'll have wait until behavior repeats itself. @ least computer still usable, it's annoying.
ok, got screenshot now. can see affected icons on launcher , menubar. program menus seem repaired terminal command, has issued several more warnings in past few minutes, not done else.
