there many reasons, 1 suffice.

security. windows platform cannot secured, anti-virus working based on blacklisting , approach flawed of course because unknown slips thru, heuristics based scan estimated catch 65% of threats, doesn't enough?
result windows wonderful base kind of cybercrime.

windows computers should not allowed online unlicensed drivers not allowed public highways. because pose danger.

above said windows computers cannot secured, that's because windows has countless vulnerabilities , ms not keen fixing them. time ago ms patched flaw existed 19 years, starting dos.

linux can secured, can other posix compliant operating systems.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
