Thread: Yet another Installation problem
hi...
reading this...
have been installing ubuntu, till 11.04 without major hassles, , consider myself worn out campaigner on subject. however, stumped. need advice.
system has 3 hdd's, of 1tb each, first 2 on sata 6gbps port, , have windows installation. third hdd (/dev/sdc) on standard sata port, has 1 windows e: partition of 350gb, not boot partition or anything, books repository. second partition on /dev/sdc /home ubuntu partition contains valuable collection, , not want lose it. ext4 format partition. rest of space free play.
trying achieve - want install self contained ubuntu 11.10 installation on disk 3, ignores first 2 drives, ignores first partition (windows) of third drive /dev/sdc, installs on space after second partition of /dev/sdc, , uses second partition /home. not need dual boot, make third drive first show changing boot order in bios whenever need go linux. similarly, set first drive first in boot order windows.
problem: able on ubuntu 10.04, 10.10. 11.04 without problems. however, in ubuntu 11.10, started installing yesterday, ends in grub rescue> , linux partitions not visible.
experiments done: installed in expert mode, specified /dev/sdc2 not formatted used /home, , no luck. then, physically removed first 2 windows disks, device /dev/sdc becomes /dev/sda, , since has not bootable windows, 1 partition, hoping able install. however, no luck - same grub same rescue ... ls command states (hd0) (hd0, msdos) , no mention of /home, or installation partitions.
advice welcome...
