Writing Keywords to file

are catalog categories , sub categories written photo file or key words?   when looking @ catalogue hierarcy how know key word , not category or sub category?

catalog categories? please explain these?

if mean tag categories no, if have applied tag "tim" file under "family" category in tag panel, writing metadata file write "tim" in image's iptc metadata.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
