Can I make parts of a button inactive?

i inexperienced flash, , trying make interactive street map. how supposed work when click button, box detailing things in area pops up.

 

i taught no-actionscript way this: insert want appear when button hit button timeline. happens things add act part of button when invisible. instance if large box supposed appears when scroll on button, not appears when scroll on button, when scroll on box. (as in box hidden cross boundaries cursor , bam! box becomes visible.)

 

there way create button when in "over" or "down" keyframes changes appearance, such label button appears when in "over" position,  new portion inert (doesn't act button)?

 

or have rewrite actionscript? if so, totlaly lost. i've followed online tutorials aren't working. such can't make object stay hidden until triggered: turned them movie clip, , in code wrote instancename._visible = false; (and yes typin in instance name says instancename). yet when test it, boxes still there- although of them missing text- thought text shows in symbol editor.

 

i working adobe flash cs5.5 on mac.

your button respond mouse whenever on that's in button's "hit" frame.  so, typically add button's off-state shape off frame , hit frame.  add text on (but not hit) frame.
