CPU Ram vs Graphics Card Upgrade for Performance in Mac pro?

just past crossroads of getting on board adobe cloud , looking on cpu ram vs. graphics card gpu.

 

hardware:

  • mac pro 4,1 (early 2009) 2.26 ghz, dual 8 core, 23 gram (5 x 4g sticks , 3 x 1g sticks), 4x 1 tb 7200rpm int. hd (1 scratch drive), (no windows stuff here)
  • ge force gt120 graphics card, machine has 64 bit capability, starts in 32 bit due older 32 bit apps still used.
  • activity monitor shows ae cs6 uses 16 threads, runs in 64 bit, , grabs 10 gig of ram operate in.

 

software:

  • running osx 10.6.8. (snow leopard) updates.
  • all main video apps: creative cloud (also have fcp studio 3 installed switching adobe on video work)

 

i ae & ppro utilize threads, render in background (which results in no crashes (so far)) because old video card gt 120 apparently no longer chokes did in fx work in fcp 7 & motion 4.

 

  1. q - can point me in direction of how adobe got machine utilize cores & threads , run in 64 bit starts in 32 bit?

 

in terms of performance, (rendering in particular) realize should move ati/apple 5870 graphics card, fixed income disabled vet, $450 hard come by. i've evaluated flashed cards including macvidcards on ebay, used cards flashed, gives me pause when same price 5870 new price.

 

so i'm wrestling trying find out best bang least $$$ is, hence title question.

 

  1. is more effective fx video work add cpu ram or (gulp) upgrade video card 5870 card?

 

example: can add 3 x 4g sticks in place of existing 3 x 1 g sticks of cpu ram less $200. new 5870 card $450 apple. approach gets me more render speed without crashes putting vfx work in ae cs6 or p pro cs6?

 

sorry i'm more little hazy on this, hoping kind soul point way,

to playback assistance premiere pro or ray-traced rendering ae must have nvidia card. there several posts regarding best values these cards. check system requirements in adobe product pages , seek out other recent posts on forum subject.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
