How content-aware fill with smart objects

i've done (hopefully) exhaustive search, , don't see on how use these things together...

open image smart object.  add layer cloning , healing.  maybe add curves adjustment layer and/or hue/sat adjustment layer.  adjust things needed.

decide want extend background on 1 side.  increase canvas on side.  select chunk of canvas.  process should used employ content-aware fill new piece of canvas?  don't seem able have smart object layer selected.  if have layer selected fill fails saying there aren't enough opaque (?) pixels.

oddly, can't find discussion on anywhere...  there's got better way i've tried far.

at present way i've found

duplicate smart object

rasterize it

select part fill

do content-aware fill

leave selection on , copy/paste selection it's on new layer

delete rasterized copy of smart object

there's gotta better/smarter/faster way this...  how other people doing this?
