Thread: How to start VPN without using nm-applet?

(i have searched nm-applet not showing in unity, , tried various fixes suggested, have given , looking work-around...)

running natty 11.4, , have network manager applet running fine in main (admin) account. use connect wireless network , run vpn connection on that. problem this:

have set non-admin account other uses. use user switching go between accounts. non-admin account not show nm applet. not problem @ first when switch account - if connected in main, admin account, , switch non-admin account, still connected, vpn running, good.

vpn regularly bombs out every hour or so. , when happens, don't know how re-start it, since there no nm applet. i've tried running nm-applet says service running. don't know how run other (sudo) commands non-admin account, since not admin account, password not give me access. have given on solving now.

have been doing switching accounts admin account, restarting vpn connection, switching back... know there more intelligent way this, if can't ever nm applet running in other account.

help.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
