Thread: nubbie needs guidance

hello all....first post , should easy 1 experts on forum.

have downloaded iso , burned disk ubuntu 11.10. system older amd machine running windows xp pro sp3. have mirrored pair of 160g sata drives partitioned 80g windows , unallocated partition of 80g. install linux on unpartitioned area , make dual boot system. have loaded cd , poked around , os seems looking for. have been through website http://members.iinet.net.au/~herman546/p17.html#preparation_for_the_install_
i'm not grasping need do. when try run install, linux see's windows 80g partition nd nothing else can tell. partitioned 2nd 80g 60g , 20g part, , os still did not see new parts.

kind lost here....

replies

1. don't partition ntfs linux, doesn't install on ntfs.

2. installing on raid (i assume fakeraid, bios raid) need use alternate install cd, not standard desktop image. can done, grub2 doesn't install correctly desktop cd. alternate cd has raid support , recommended raid.

prefer manual partitioning during install. need minimum 2 partitions, bigger root '/' partition, , smaller swap.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings. how do I change the e-mail address for my merchant account
