Thread: Start up problems?

hello, new ubuntu/linux. had windows when first got laptop (t43 ibm thinkpad) virus crashed whole system, caused me install ubuntu/linux. first 6 months or had ubuntu, didn't have problems. after while, happened (i'm not sure what- i'm thinking maybe system on heated) caused laptop crash. now, whenever turn laptop on, there maybe 25% chance starts normally. of time, when comes on , finishes loading, instead of going log in screen says 'operating system not found' @ end. now, if mess enough (put ubuntu system cd in , turn off , on , that) , comes on. when put installation cd in, never makes past loading screen (where says ubuntu , has loading dots @ bottom)

now, wanted see if there way either fix this, or if there way uninstall ubuntu , re-install windows ?

please , thank you.

hi & welcome forums,

me sounds hard disk failing. i'd suggest important data possible. try running disk check on booting live cd/usb, dropping terminal , running fsck.

don't run fsck against mounted filesystem or cause serious damage.
