Thread: 11.10: Dell Vostro 1700 - BCM4306/3. No wifi device?

so on vostro 1700 i've got troubling relationship wireless.
@ moment have no wireless device (wlan0,..),
code:
$ sudo lshw -c network *-network description: network controller product: bcm4306 802.11a wireless lan controller vendor: broadcom corporation physical id: 0 bus info: pci@0000:0c:00.0 version: 03 width: 64 bits clock: 33mhz capabilities: pm msi pciexpress bus_master cap_list configuration: driver=b43-pci-bridge latency=0 resources: irq:17 memory:f9ffc000-f9ffffff
-> logical name seems missing?

code:
$  lspci -nn | grep -i bcm  03:00.0 ethernet controller [0200]: broadcom corporation bcm4401-b0 100base-tx [14e4:170c] (rev 02)  0c:00.0 network controller [0280]: broadcom corporation bcm4306 802.11a wireless lan controller [14e4:4321] (rev 03)
code:
$ iwconfig lo no wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions.
code:
$ lsmod | grep b43  b43                   168681  0   ssb                    39320  2 b44,b43  mac80211              231927  1 b43  cfg80211              144758  2 b43,mac80211  led_class               2633  2 b43,sdhci
from found looking @ other topics, driver should b43 or legacy (though trying install
firmware-b43legacy-installer doesn't work, while non-legacy installs).
use b44 wired internet , running.

code:
$ dmesg | grep b43  [   27.292784] b43-pci-bridge 0000:0c:00.0: pci int -> gsi 17 (level, low) -> irq 17  [   27.292798] b43-pci-bridge 0000:0c:00.0: setting latency timer 64  [   27.478612] b43-phy0: broadcom 4321 wlan found (core revision 12)  [   27.524053] b43-phy0 error: found unsupported phy (analog 5, type 4, revision 2)  [   27.524214] b43: probe of ssb0:0 failed error -95
i'm guessing means have wrong driver?

code:
$ sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart * running /etc/init.d/networking restart deprecated because may not enable again interfaces * reconfiguring network interfaces... [ ok ]
i've tried, http://www.broadcom.com/docs/linux_sta/readme.txt
method hangs me @ 1 of last steps:
code:
# insmod wl.ko insmod: error inserting 'wl.ko': -1 file exists
(i realize card number didn't match, 1 can hope -.-)
code:
$ locate wl.ko  /lib/modules/2.6.32-23-generic/kernel/net/wireless/wl.ko  /lib/modules/2.6.32-35-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/wl.ko  /lib/modules/2.6.35-31-generic/kernel/drivers/rtc/rtc-twl.ko  /usr/src/modules/broadcom-sta/i386/.wl.ko.cmd  /usr/src/modules/broadcom-sta/i386/wl.ko
code:
$ uname -mr  2.6.35-31-generic i686
i've tried https://help.ubuntu.com/community/wi...driver/bcm43xx
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/wi...oadcom_bcm4306
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu...question/56830
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1644990

in earlier distro, believe hardy or before that, able fix once finding correct module far i've not been able fix again :/

used have sta proprietary driver (which made work) has long since vanished options

i've inserted wireless usb stick friend.
first time worked off bat.
afterwards worked , stopped working.

have suggestions? i'm hoping did wrong along line , it's stupid mistake on part

bump
