Thread: Mythbutu 11.04 -> 11.10 breaks X-server

hello,

had working version of mythbuntu 11.04 on laptop , gave in frequent suggestions upgrade ubuntu 11.00 afternoon. friday afternoon not time update. after installing updates, restarted , found x server broke.

can login consoles alt-f1...alt-f5 fine x server shows blank seen. myth backend seems running fine , mythweb web server (apache). file system seems ok x-display flashes few times , there blank screen. have tried..

init 3
init 5

restart x server same result.

see error message flash after grub cannot make out anything. switches purple splash screen before flashing followed

thought update should not change configuration files , should work before.

ideas?

looked @ /var/log/xorg.0.log file , found following

there no configuration using defaults. conf files under /usr/share/x11/xorg.conf.d did not have screen or monitor sections. had several input sections similar to

identifier "evdev pointer catchall"
matchispointer "on"
matchdevicepath "/dev/input/event*"
driver "evdev"
endsection

tried create new configuration file with

xorg -configure

ot following:

(ee) failed load module "vmwgfx" (module not exist, 0)
(ee) vmware: please ignore above warnings not being able to load module/driver vmwgfx
(++) using config file: "/root/xorg.conf.new"
(==) using system config directory "/usr/share/x11/xorg.conf.d"
number of created screens not match number of detected devices.
configuration failed.
ddxsiggiveup: closing log

cannot understand 2 screens coming from.

@ 1 time old configuration had added external monitor , disabled in xfwm window manager. tried turning external monitor on without luck.

had suggested should turn off autologon off (/etc/gdm/custom.conf). did not help.
