Thread: problems with LiveCd upgrade

hello,
upgraded ubuntu 11.04 11.11 using live cd because updater refused find new version of ubuntu.
system froze when install completed(?) , when machine restated, not recognise password.
used psychocats ubuntu tutorial on how reset password in ubuntu in effort resolve issue.
following steps in tutorial following:-

ls /home brian

however, when -

passwd brian

either 'command not found' or more irritating message saying that user not exit

mean have screwed system , lose emails, data files , collected addresses etc or there still hope ?

newby (rapidly becoming ludite), can offer me possible solution?
(or should go , buy carrier pigeon? )

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings. how do I change the e-mail address for my merchant account
