Thread: Why am I only getting Vesa mode for my video card?

i have amd hd radeon 6850. while in windows run, starcraft 2 example, in extreme of extreme graphical settings pretty easily. switched on ubuntu 11.10 because windows 7 starting fail on me.

have gotten ubuntu set , running smoothly on desktop. games have have video settings set lowest 20 frames per second. did reading, , if understand correctly, reason why have have lowest settings because have "vesa" video driver. not support 2d or 3d acceleration , nothing in gaming.

question how better mode other vesa? can driver allow card again perform designed?

appreciate , answers.

more information system:

cpu - amd phenom ii x6 1090t
ram - 8gb ddr3

let me know if there information might have missed, or if need addition details issue.

install propietary drivers. try looking addition hardware drivers.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
