Create bevel text

i have pse 11. trying create bevel text on top of image. not work me. add text, times nr, black or grey, grey 50% opacity. switch effects, choose bevel , nothing happens?

is there tutorial clip this?

did you, example, choose horizontal type tool , after commiting text, double clicked

on 1 of layer style thumbnails in effects panel?

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
