Thread: Experimenting with software RAID in VirtualBox; need help

i finished setting software raid-1 array in virtualbox 2 10 gb drives. setup , install pretty simple , smooth. after system alive decided testing. shut vm off, opened storage settings menu , detached primary drive (or rather, drive on sata port 0; second drive being on port 1).

started vm , sat @ cursor 20 seconds stuff whipped , noticed said running in degraded mode, proceeded boot otherwise normal looking. though, "let's see happens when this" , decided create empty folder on desktop , shut down (to see if sync later missing drive after bring mix).

re-attached primary, booted, no messages raid software anywhere along way degraded mode or otherwise, looked normal. shutdown, removed secondary drive time. when booted time takes me prompt says "error: disk missing" , grub> prompt blinking cursor.

i'm not sure if suppose happen in real life or if quirk happening because simulated in vbox or if there supposed after re-attaching first "bad" drive. appreciated.

i haven't work raid first thing on mind after re-attach "bad" disk have wait sync first. if disconnected second disk while still not synced, go crazy.

can see status of array/sync with:

cat /proc/mdstat

ps. 1 more thing. if remember correctly, before removing disk if failed totally, need mark failed in array config. command like:
sudo mdadm --manage /dev/mdx --fail /dev/sdxy

need every partition on disk part of software raid. if testing removing /dev/sda, mark fail /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2, etc in respective arrays. disconnect disk. should apply vbox.
