Highlight/Clipping different in LR to Camera?

hi

 

i new lr(4.3) , trying product photography.  nikon d40 isn't supported tethering, i'm using nikon camera control , folder watching in lr.  i'm new photography in general , spending lot of time adjusting lights , camera settings background (white) blown out product can selected later in ps.

 

i want able see highlights through lr can see on of camera.  works in develop screen pressing j.  however, highlight coverage different of camera shows.  i.e on of camera close blown out on background, in lr there hardly red on background.  can adjust in lr, rather right without editing.

 

not sure if of makes sense, appreciate on this.

it sounds shooting raw files. correct?

 

if so, difference seeing camera showing 'clipping' on jpeg preview. lightroom showing clipping on raw file. raw file has greater fidelity in highlights region jpeg preview , ability capture , display more detail near white side of histogram. lightroom designed recover region of highlights clipped off in-camera processing.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
