Thread: cannot restart after installing to new partition

hello
have new dell inspiron 620. set windows 7 , within windows partitioned as ubuntu 11.10. (my old dell runs 10.04) husband uses windows remote desktop work home.

after switching pc boot disc, inserted 11.10 cd , followed usual install prompts. upon restarting, brought screen select ubuntu or windows boot , when select ubuntu, screen momentarily goes purple, black, jungle welcome song plays, webcam recognised, still screen black. @ first suspected install did not go because of install cd, downloaded again, , made new cd , burned @ 16x- slowest speed can.

re-installed , selected install 11.10 , remove old 11.10 option. no change above, when in windows disk management, have 2 additional partitions windows , planned ubuntu partitions , both 5.98gb assume 2 installs. neither these smaller partitions nor planned ubuntu partition have file system format (like ntfs or ext)windows 7 functioning correctly.

how can ubuntu install planned partition , how can work? can delete 2 smaller new partitions?

what hardware specs? can boot livecd without problems , working desktop?

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
