Thread: Laptop suddenly shutting down?

this isn't ubuntu question, more of general laptop/hardware question, these forums have lot's of smart brains thought i'd try , see if can help.

laptop (dell xps m1330) shut down...completely , instantly turn off when it's not plugged in. happens after 5 minutes of being unplugged, it's hour after being unplugged. physical power light on battery lights of way, , system (both in kubuntu , windows 7) show laptop battery being charged , "2 hours" or remaining.

ideas of cause power off? ideas of way can test or check logs? don't know if it's battery problem, or problem else on laptop, i'm pretty sure it's not os issue.

thoughts?

could issue overheating. did system log files, since these may contain additional information on why shut down.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
