i installed ubuntu 11.10 day ago. used have access sun microsystems' workstation gnu gcc installed , have c/c++ programs want recompile , run in ubuntu.

day-2 question wheter or not free gnu gcc package can work within ubuntu , if there success story in regard.

er...ubuntu based around open-source , gnu, yes.

open teminal (ctrl-alt-t) , type:

sudo apt-get install gcc g++ build-essential
which install gcc (for c), g++ (for c++), , build-essential (some stuff make work, think. clarification please!)

solaris -> linux, not sure imagine long didn't link against weird, should okay.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
